July 15-16 — The Kingscreek Music Festival at Kingscreek Community Park, Hwy. 160, begins at 6 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday. Performers are Will Caudill and Route 7, Country Troubadours, Sunrise Ridge, Dean Osborne Band, Mountain Melody and Cross Country Bluegrass. July 16 — Appalachian Strings will play at Country Cabin II in Norton, Va. The show will take place from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children 2 to 11 years old.
July 17 — Sunrise Ridge will perform at the Carcassonne square dance at the Carcassonne Community Center. Dinner is 5:30 p.m., dancing at 7 p.m. Square dance callers will be Tyler Hughes and Erin Cokonougher Stidham. Cost for adults attending dinner and dance is $7. Dance only $5. Cost for children 5 to 11 for dinner and dance is $5. Dance only $3. There will be a cakewalk during the dance, and a playground is available. July 19 — The National Black Lung Association will meet at 2 p.m. at the Letcher County Extension Office, 478 Extension Drive, in Whitesburg. Staff of the Respiratory Clinics of Eastern Kentucky and local attorneys who assist with federal black lung claims will be at the meeting to provide information and answer questions. Retired and active miners, widows, spouses and others who
are interested in working with our local chapter of the National Black Lung Association to improve the black lung laws for miners and their dependents are requested to attend. August 5-6 — A reunion of the Adams, Thompson and Blair families will be held at the Arthur and Helmer Adams property on Blair Branch.
