June 28 — A closing reception will be held at the Appalshop Gallery in Whitesburg from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, for Common Heritage, a multimedia exhibit of images and items from the family collections of eastern Kentucky residents. The event will also feature the paintings of local artist Russell Griswold, whose exhibit closes on June 30. It is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served. The exhibit is the culmination of a yearlong, National Endowment for the Humanities-supported project to preserve and increase public awareness of personal archives. The exhibit include photographs dating from 1910 to the early 1960s, hand-made textiles, musical instruments, farming and foodways items, and other historical objects that provide windows into eastern Kentucky life, work, play, families and community. June 29 — Karaoke will take place at the American Legion Post on Pine Mountain every Friday beginning at 9 p.m. Attendees must be 21 years old or older. For more information, call 633-2834.
June 28 — The Letcher County Community Blood Drive will take place from noon to 6 p.m. on the Kentucky Blood Center bloodmobile at Whitesburg Plaza. The blood drive is sponsored by Whitesburg Walmart. Donors will receive a t-shirt and a chance to win a Toyota 4Runner.
