January 21 — Cowan Community Center’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. and the program at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church on Madison Avenue in Whitesburg. Guest speakers will be Pastor James Butler and Whitesburg Police Chief Tyrone Fields. The event is partnered by Whitesburg First Baptist Church, Cowan Community Center and Appalshop Inc.
January 22 — The Southeast Kentucky Chapter of the National Black Lung Association will meet at 2 p.m. at the Letcher County Health Department, 115 East Main Street, Whitesburg. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend. Respiratory Clinics of Eastern Kentucky staff and local attorneys with experience assisting with federal black lung claims will be present to answer questions and provide information.
