August 3 — The Kentucky Coal Academy will host a job fair at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College’s Harlan Campus at 164 Ball Park Road from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help recruit displaced miners for new jobs with Warrior Met Coal Company in Alabama. Experienced miners, including certified electricians, equipment operators and supervisors, are encouraged to attend the event to have a sameday interview. Registration will be in the Building One Atrium.

August 4 — An apple grafting workshop will be held at 5 p.m. at the Letcher County Extension Office in Whitesburg. The cost is $5 and each participant will receive two potted apple rootstocks to graft and should bring his or her own scion wood. Class size is limited to 20 persons and spots may be reserved. August 4 — Letcher Middle School will have sixth grade orientation from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the LMS library. Letcher Middle School’s back-to-school pool party and cookout will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Whitesburg Municipal Swimming Pool. The event is for all incoming LMS students, staff and families. August 5 — A back-toschool bash will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at HLT Check Exchange in Ermine. It will include face painting, free school supply packs, and free food. Register to win one of two backpacks full of school supplies and one of two bicycles that will be given away that day. HLT Check Exchange along with Pine Mountain Rent to Own will host the event.

August 5-6 — A reunion of the Adams, Thompson and Blair families will be held at the Arthur and Helmer Adams property on Blair Branch. August 6 —The 13th reunion of the family of Henry and Rosilla Collins and Silas and Effie Collins will be held at Pin Oak at Carr Creek Lake from noon to 6 p.m. Those attending should bring a covered dish. For more information, call Oscar Collins at 633-0068, or Russell Collins at 633-0758.

August 6-7 — Descendants of W.S. and Laura Bentley will host a reunion. On Sunday, there will be a dinner at 1 p.m. at the old Bentley farm at Letitia on Schultz Road near South Shore in Greenup County. Those attending should bring a covered dish. Table service provided. Family, friends and neighbors are invited to attend. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Mt. Zion Cemetery at Siloam for Beulah Bentley-Collier. For more information, call D. August 20 — Elkhorn Shrine Club will hold a fourwheeler poker run. Sign-up will be at 11 a.m. at Fishpond Lake and the ride will begin at noon rain or shine. The cost is $10 per poker hand, with prizes of $100 for the best hand and $50 for the second best hand. Hot dogs, chips and soft drinks will be provided at the end of the ride. August 20 — The Lillian Faye Simpson Scholarship Golf Classic, a four-player scramble, will be held at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course in Cumberland. Proceeds will go to the Southeast Education Foundation. Tee times are 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Registration is at 7:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Entry fee is $250 per team, which includes green fees, use of a cart, event t-shirt and lunch. Golfers will compete for prizes in contests, including putting, longest drive, closest to pin shot and closest second shot on a designated hole. Prizes of $600 will go to the first-place team, $400 to second place, and $200 to third place. Creech Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac of Harlan will give a car to the first golfer to hit a hole-inone on the par-three hole number six. The event is sponsored by Appalachian Regional Healthcare, the Kentucky Coal Academy, and American Business Solutions Xerox. Entry forms are at golf courses across the area. September 12 — The Letcher County Mountain Heritage Baby Pageant, sponsored by the Mountain Heritage Festival Committee, will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Letcher County Central High School auditorium. All contestants must be residents of Letcher County. Applications must be accompanied by a $25 entry fee and must be received by Saturday, Sept. 3. September 17 — The 29th annual Seals and Sexton reunion, descendants of the late James Seals Sr. and first wife Mary Polly Ann (Bentley) Seals and second wife Alice (Amburgey) Seals, the late Delzie and Nannie (Sexton) Seals, and the late James C. Sexton and first wife George Ann (Strong) Sexton, second wife Martha Sexton and third wife Lucinda Sexton (Gibson) Sexton, will be held at the Pin Oak picnic area, Shelter #2, at Carr Creek Lake from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Those attending should bring a covered dish and old photos.
