December 14 — Two blood drives by the Kentucky Blood Center will be held in Whitesburg. The blood drives will take place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Mountain Comprehensive Health, and from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital. . December 17 — Appalachian Strings will play at Country Cabin II in Norton, Va. The show will take place from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children 2 to 11 years old. The Country Cabin II will be closed December 24.
. December 20 — The National Black Lung Association will meet at 2 p.m. at the Letcher County Extension Office, 478 Extension Drive in Whitesburg. Staff members of the Respiratory Clinics of Eastern Kentucky and local attorneys who assist with federal black lung claims will be at the meeting to provide information and answer questions. All retired and active miners, widows, spouses and others who are interested in working with the local chapter of the National Black Lung Association to improve the black lung laws for miners and their dependents are requested to attend.
