May 5 — A benefit auction for Wade Whitaker and his family will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Blackey Community Center.

May 5-8 — Black Mountain Wildflower Weekend, sponsored by Pine Mountain Settlement School, will take place on the highest point in Kentucky, Black Mountain. The mountain is home to many rare species of wildflowers including painted trillium, rosy twisted stalk, purple fringed orchid, and Kentucky’s largest population of Turk’s cap lily. A concert open to the public will take place at 7 p.m., May 6, with banjo legend John Haywood. The concert is free with a suggested $5 donation. For more information, call (606) 558-3571.

May 6 — Bluegrass Circle will play at the Country Cabin in Norton, Va., from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children 2 to 11 years old. Line Dance classes each Monday through June 5, 6 p.m. for beginners; 7 p.m. for intermediate. Clogging classes each Thursday through June 8, 6 p.m. for beginners, 7 p.m. intermediate. May 13 — A Mother’s Day plant and flower sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Blackey Community Center. Crafts, hotdogs and drinks will also be sold.

May 9 — The Letcher County Extension District Board will meet at the Extension Office in Whitesburg. The meeting will begin at 5 p.m.

May 13 — Gwen Rollins’s Antiques and More will hold a sale of antiques, handmade items, and soaps from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Calvary College gymnasium.
