Concerts to feature coal mining music

Men of the Deeps, a choir of working and retired coal miners from the island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia, Canada, will perform February 5 at Letcher County Central High School in Whitesburg. The group will be joined by singers featured on Music of Coal: Mining Songs from the Appalachian Coalfields.

Music of Coal will begin at 6 p.m. and Men of the Deeps will take the stage at 7 p.m.

Organized in 1966, the Men of the Deeps preserve in song the rich culture and folklore of Cape Breton’s coal mining communities.

The two-CD collection, “Music of Coal: Mining Songs from the Appalachian Coalfields”, produced by the Lonesome Pine Office on Youth in Big Stone Gap, Va., presents songs sung and written by coal-miners, their children and grandchildren. The concerts will feature Ron Short, Molly Slemp and the father-and-son duo Rick and Chris Saenz.

On February 6, Music of Coal and Men of the Deeps will appear at Mountain Empire Community College’s Goodloe Center in Big Stone Gap, Virginia starting at 6:30 p.m. and Men of the Deeps at 7:30 p.m. For more information and ticket purchases call Pro-Art Association Wise, Virginia at (276) 376-4520 or email pro-art@uvawise.edu ; Lonesome Pine Office on Youth, (276) 523-5064 ext. 10 or info@lpoy.com.
