The Letcher County Central Cougars improved their record to 17 wins and nine losses on the season Friday with a 56 to 52 win on the road at Stanton in Powell County.
The Cougars hope the win keeps them on the winning track again after their six-game winning streak was stopped just one night before in Paintsville, where the Tigers out-clawed the Cougars, 69 to 55.
Trevor Hardin scored 12 points, Greg Kincer scored 11 points, and Tyler Boggs added 10 to lead the Cougars in a game that saw them take a 16 to 11 lead by the end of the first quarter. LCC outscored Powell County in every quarter except the third, when the Cougars could manage only six points — a three-pointer by Ryan Lebrun, a field goal by Dakota Shepherd, and a free throw by Tyler Boggs — while Powell County managed to put up 11 points, six of those coming from DaShawn Williams.
Both teams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, with the Cougars converting on seven of 10 free throws to seal the win.
Caleb Stidham added seven points to the LCC effort, while Dakota Shepherd scored five. Matthew Dicks and Dylan Webb each scored four points, while Lebrun rounded out the scoring with his trey.
On February 5, the Cougars hosted Cordia and came out winners over that Knott County school, 67 to 52.
Greg Kincer scored 19 points to lead the Cougars in that contest; eight of those coming in the second quarter after LCC had fallen behind early, 21-14. Kincer’s effort led the Cougars to a 36 to 34 lead by halftime.
Caleb Stidham hit seven of eight free throws in the final period and wound up with 15 points on the night. The Cougars got nine points from Tyler Boggs and seven points each from Ryan Lebrun and Dakota Shepherd. Dylan Webb and Parker Williams each scored five points for LCC.
After hosting Hazard last night (Tuesday), the Cougars were scheduled to wrap up their regular season on Thursday night at Perry County Central.
Post-season tournament play begins next week.
