Cougars to host Bulldogs

The Letcher County Central High School Cougars are facing their third tough challenge in a row as they look for their first win of the season this Friday against the visiting Hazard Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs, a perennial Class A power, are led by senior quarterback Bailey Blair and senior running back Skylar Pelfrey. They opened their season August 24 with a 43-26 win over host Harlan County Central High School in a game that saw Blair pass for 150 yards and Pelfrey run for 119 yards.

Letcher Central opened its season August 17 with a 49-22 loss at Knox Central, the state’s No. 5-ranked team in Class 4A, and the Cougars faced an equally tough challenge at home this past Friday night against a strong Bell County team and lost, 40-22.

The 22 points scored by the Cougar offense were the first points given up by Bell County this season. The Bobcats blanked Middlesboro the week before. While Letcher Central and Bell County were each limited to 54 yards passing, the Bobcats outgained the Cougars on the ground, 308 yards to 145 yards and rushing for four touchdowns along the way.

Kickoff for Friday night’s game at Ermine is 7:30 p.m.
