County is 1 of only 3 where jobless rate fell

Letcher County is one of only three Kentucky counties where unemployment rates fell over a 12- month period ending in November. Jobless rates increased in 116 other Kentucky counties during the same period and remained the same in one.

The Kentucky Office of Employment and Training said Letcher County’s jobless rate in November was 6.6 percent, down from 6.8 percent last year. Letcher County had the second lowest unemployment rate in the eight-county Kentucky River Area Development District, trailing Knott County’s 6.3 percent.

Office of Employment and Training spokeswoman Cathy Lindsey said Jackson County’s 11.8 percent unemployment rate was the highest in the state in November. Lindsey said Clay, Maggoffin, McCreary and Wolfe counties had jobless rates above 10 percent.

Fayette County had the lowest unemployment at 4.8 percent.
