Couple face assault charges

Police say a McRoberts woman was charged with firstdegree assault after she stabbed her boyfriend with a knife during an alcohol-fueled argument. The boyfriend is facing a misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree assault.

Carlene Tackett and Clyde Maggard Jr. both were drunk on the night of July 5 when a “verbal argument” turned into a multiple case of assault, a spokesman with the Kentucky State Police said.

“Ms. Tackett retrieved a knife and assaulted Mr. Maggard. Mr. Maggard also assaulted Ms. Tackett during the altercation,” said Trooper Tony Watts, public affairs officer with Post 13 in Hazard. “Maggard had fled the scene prior to officers and (emergency medical services personnel) arriving. While police were attempting to locate Mr. Maggard in the area, another call came in stating he was back at the residence and the two were fighting again.”

Watts said that when police and ambulance crews went back to the home they took Tackett to jail and Maggard to the hospital for treatment of his wounds.

“Ms. Tackett was taken into custody and charged with assault first-degree,” Watts said. “Mr. Maggard was also arrested after being treated for his injuries and charged with assault fourth-degree (domestic violence). Both parties were lodged in the Letcher County Jail.”

Watts said the incident remains under investigation by Trooper Ben McCray.

Tackett pleaded not guilty to the charge during her initial court appearance last week. She is scheduled to appear at a preliminary hearing today (Wednesday) in Letcher District Court at 10:30 a.m.

Maggard also pleaded not guilty during his initial court appearance. His next scheduled court appearance is for a pre-trial conference on July 31 at 1 p.m.
