An evening out turned into more than Rhonda Adams, daughter of Paul and Joy Adams of Mayking, bargained for when she and her date, Brian Shoemaker of Louisville, attended a concert featuring actress/comedienne Carol Burnett.

One week before the concert, held at Indiana University in Bloomington, Shoemaker contacted the drama department at IU to ask for help with a plan he had. Eventually even Carol Burnett herself got involved.

During the question and answer part of the show, with a cue from Burnett, Shoemaker raised his hand to ask a question. When Burnett called on him, he told her he had a question, but not for Burnett. Instead, Shoemaker’s question was for Adams. As he extended his hand towards Adams, Shoemaker took the microphone, knelt, and popped the question “Will you marry me?” The audience (all 500 members at the April 18 show) went wild with applause. Burnett shared her famous “Tarzan” yell and Adams said “Yes!”

After the show Shoemaker and Adams had the thrill of being escorted backstage to Burnett’s dressing room to share quality time with a very gracious Carol Burnett.

The couple will be married in a private ceremony on July 23, and will host a public worship celebration on September 3 at Buckner Baptist Church in Louisville. And yes, Carol Burnett was invited.
