The Cowan Community Center is engaged in a project to collect as many stories as possible about people’s life experiences in Letcher County. The stories are going to be turned into a play to be presented during this year’s Mountain Heritage Festival in September.
Two meetings have been held and some wonderful stories have been shared, but many more stories are needed to put together a good history of Letcher County.
The Cowan Community Center is particularly interested in stories relating to mining, the Scotia Coal disaster, the history of early businesses in Letcher County, the early days of education in the county, life in coal camps, and generally all stories that depict life in earlier years in the county.
The next meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, in the Harry M. Caudill Library in Whitesburg. The stories are told and recorded and everyone’s story is considered important.
