Cowan Creek Music School to be held June 22 to 26

The Cowan Creek Mountain Music School will take place June 22 to June 26 at the Cowan Community Center. The school brings together some of the country’s finest old-time musicians and students of all levels.

Historically, mountain music has been passed down through the generations as young learners listened to and played along with their older family members and neighbors. In keeping with this tradition, all classes at the Cowan Creek Mountain Music School are taught by call and response rather than written music.

In addition to classroom instruction in banjo, fiddle, guitar, old time string band, old time singing, square dance calling, and storytelling, activities at the school will include visits and performances by musicians Clyde Davenport, Donna and Lewis Lamb, and George Gibson, and jam sessions. Students can choose from a singer’s circle, beginning bass, clogging, a four-part harmony workshop, and square dancing. There will also be field trips to visit banjo master Lee Sexton and to the Big Cowan Old Regular Baptist Church for a singing led by James Caudill.

On June 23 and June 25, George Gibson, Roger Cooper, Bruce Green, and the rest of the school’s faculty will perform at the Appalshop.
