Cowan Community Action Group, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, has received a $66,720 grant from Grow Appalachia for 2015. This is the fourth year the Cowan Community Center has served as host of the Grow Appalachia program.
The funding will support the establishment of home and community gardens to provide high-quality, organically grown food for area residents. The organization also supports growers who are expanding their gardens to market vegetables. Last year, the group worked with 60 families and grew 56,000 pounds of food.
A meeting will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Cowan Community Center to share information about the program and to recruit participants. For more information, contact the Cowan Community Center or Valerie Horn at (606) 634-9468.
Grow Appalachia is headquartered at Berea College. Last year, it worked with more than 5,000 gardeners and almost 3,000 families, growing 638,836 pounds of food.
