Cowan Music School nominated for award

The Cowan Creek Mountain Music School has been named a semifinalist for a 2009 Coming Up Taller award. The award recognizes programs involved in youth after-school and outof school arts and humanities learning. It is given each year by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The Cowan Creek Mountain Music School, a program of the Cowan Community Action Group, is held each year in June. The school offers a week of intensive instruction in traditional fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, singing, dulcimer making, square dancing and storytelling for youth ages 11 through adults. Instruction ranges from absolute beginner to advanced levels and focuses on the east Kentucky repertoire. Students, including beginners, learn to play in groups during daily faculty-led jam sessions and are encouraged to participate as band members during the evening square dances.

The winners of the award will be announced by the end of June. In addition to national recognition, the award recipients will receive a plaque and $10,000.
