Cowan residents will meet later this month to organize a Neighborhood Watch after a resident was beaten severely during a home invasion last month.
The meeting is scheduled at 6 p.m., February 26, at Cowan Community Center. Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines will be at the meeting to talk to residents about how they can be safe in their homes and watch out for each other. Residents asked for the meeting following the brutal beating January 27 of Scott Day, 60, in his home about a halfmile from the community center.
Day has undergone several surgeries to repair damage caused when he was beaten, apparently with a hammer, after two people broke into his home early that morning. Friends say he lost one eye in the attack, and has multiple other injuries. No arrests have been made.
