Whitesburg Rotarians Evelyn Hensley, Margaret Hammonds and Keisha Eary recently presented dictionaries to Cowan Elementary School third-grade students taught by Hilda Burns and Melissa Caudill as part of an annual Whitesburg Rotary Club project to address literacy.
All third graders in the Letcher County and Jenkins Independent School Systems receive dictionaries each year. The dictionaries are a gift to the students to use at school or at home. Students are always excited to receive their own dictionary as many students do not have a dictionary at home.
The goal of The Dictionary Project is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners. The Dictionary Project is available in all 50 states and dictionaries are made available to students through sponsors like the Rotary Club of Whitesburg.
