Creech, Lady Cavs too much for LCC



The Letcher Central Lady Cougars travel to Pikeville Thursday to take on the 6-5 Lady Panthers before returning home for a brief two-game home stand. The Lady Cougars (4-10) host the rematch with the June Buchanan Lady Crusaders (5-4) January 18 before hosting Shelby Valley January 20. The Lady Wildcats, now 15-2, are the current 15th Region All ‘A’ Tournament champs.

The Jenkins Lady Cavaliers, who played Leslie County last night (Tuesday) in the 14th Region All ‘A’ Classic, will visit Knott Central January 18 and Cordia January 22.

Jenkins 64 Letcher Central 44

Senior Whitney Creech continued her record-breaking offensive performance and the Jenkins Lady Cavaliers snapped a three-game losing streak by defeating visiting district rival Letcher Central 64-44 January 8.

Creech, who has signed to play collegiately next season at Western Kentucky University, scored a game high 50 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.

She is averaging nearly 40 points per game to lead the state in scoring and is on track to set a new state career scoring mark before she ends this season.

Alexis Stambaugh scored seven points for the Lady Cavs (8-7), who will be playing in the 14th Region All ‘A’ Tournament this week. Emilee Rose scored three points and McKenzie Gibson and Shae Rose chipped in with two points each . e

Th Lady Cougars trailed 21-11 after the opening quarter and 35-22 at the half with Creech scoring 27 points. The Lady Cavs steadily pulled away in the second half, leading LCC 50-31 after three quarters.

Junior Destiny Hall led LCC with 15 points and sister Shelby Hall scored 11 points. Alyssa Adams chipped in with six points and Samantha Tubbs wound up with five points. Jody Fleming scored four points and Paige Caudill two points. Alyssa Franklin finished with one point.

June Buchanan 43 Letcher Central 42

After winning a 102-98 shootout over visiting Jenkins January 2, the host June Buchanan Lady Crusaders outlasted Letcher Central’s Lady Cougars 43-42 January 5 for their first-ever victory over LCC.

LCC trailed 9-6 after the first quarter, 16-9 at the half and 28-20 after three quarters.

The Lady Cougars closed to within 43-39 in the final minute and withstood Shelby Hall’s trey at the end.

Destiny Hall led 4-10 LCC with 14 points. Shelby Hall finished with 12 points — 10 coming in the final quarter. Paige Caudill scored eight points and Alyssa Adams chipped in with six points. Samantha Tubbs wound up with two points.

Lindsay Proffit led 6-5 JBS with a game-high 18 points — 15 coming in the second half. Megan Hall scored 10 points and Lexie Likens finished with eight.

Letcher Central 74 Cordia 41

Because of a scheduling conflict with the Cordia Lady Lions participating in the All ‘A’ Tournament January 6, that game was moved to January 4. The host Letcher Central Lady Cougars won easily 74-41 with 12 players breaking into the scoring column.

The Lady Cougars led 22-0 after the first quarter, 34-8 at the half and 52-24 after three quarters.

Stidham’s game-high 18 points led winless (0-8) Cordia. Autumn Spencer chipped in with 12 points.

Destiny Hall’s 11 points led 4-9 LCCHS. Grayson Collier scored nine points and Shelby Hall and Camryn Parks finished with eight points each. Cameron Kincer finished with seven points. Paige Caudill, Emma Maggard and Jody Fleming chipped in with six points each. Alyssa Adams scored five points and Alyssa Franklin tossed in four points. Kamy Adams and Brooklyn Collins scored two points each.
