Ten military rifles used by the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans are missing and the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department is looking for information leading to their recovery.
“They had been stored for years in a room in the bottom of Letcher Funeral Home,” said Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb. “As years went by members passed away or are in nursing homes. There was nobody to keep track of the weapons.”
The DAV state office noticed that the M1 Garand semi-automatic rifles were unaccounted for and eventually reported the incident to the sheriff ’s department. DAV members used to perform military funerals with the rifles.
Webb will enter the information into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) as stolen property unless more information becomes available.
Persons who may have information about the misplaced rifles are asked to call the sheriff ’s department at 606-633-2293.
