David Lucas exhibit planned

The Kentucky Folk Art Center at Morehead State University and The Courthouse Café in Whitesburg will hold a special preview of KFAC’s major new exhibition of works by Letcher County painter David Lucas. The reception will be held on Saturday, April 20, 6-8 p.m. at The Courthouse Café in downtown Whitesburg.

The event will feature several paintings by Lucas from the collection of Josephine Richardson, refreshments, and live music. The event is being staged in advance of the opening of a major exhibition of Lucas’s works at Kentucky Folk Art Center. The KFAC exhibition will open on the evening of May 31 in conjunction with KFAC’s “A Day in the Country” folk art fair and will feature more than 60 paintings and drawings by Lucas.

“David Lucas is one of the most important and prolific self-taught painters that Kentucky has ever produced,” said KFAC’s Artistic Director Adrian Swain. “His portraits and landscapes capture the beauty and struggles of life in southeast Kentucky, and the composition of his paintings is remarkable.”

“Josephine Richardson, who owns The Courthouse Café in Whitesburg, is a member of our board and a collector of David Lucas’s work,” said KFAC Director Matt Collinsworth. “This seemed like a unique opportunity to do something in David’s home community to promote the exhibition and recognize his work. This is the first time we’ve ever planned an exhibition preview event like this, and we’re excited about it. We look forward to making new friends in Whitesburg.”

Kentucky Folk Art Center is a cultural, educational and economic development service of Morehead State University. The Center is open Monday- Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call KFAC 606.783.2204 or go to www.kyfolkart.org, or call The Courthouse Café at (606) 633-9637.
