David Whitaker dies in Lexington




David Whitaker, 75, of Cumberland died August 27 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington following a long illness.

Born in Letcher County, he had lived in Harlan County for more than 30 years. He was a heavy equipment operator and was retired from U.S. Steel and Arch Coal, and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America and Blair Chapel in Cumberland.

He was a son of the late Leonard and Ritter Riddle Whitaker, and a brother of the late Clay Whitaker, Beech Whitaker, Irvin Whitaker, Tub Whitaker, Charlotte Rhinehart and Darcus Peyton.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Caudill Whitaker; three children, Gary Whitaker and wife Deedee, Morristown, Tenn., Sandra Fields and husband David, Cumberland, and Greg Whitaker, Rutledge, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Jeff Whitaker, Stephanie Whitaker, Megan Fields Hurt, Jonathan Fields; and a great-grandson, Jaxson Hurt.

Funeral services were held August 30. Burial was in Peaceful Acres Cemetery at Hiram.
