A project completed recently by students, faculty and staff involved with the Appalachian Program at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College will be dedicated at noon, Thursday, May 24, outside the East Kentucky Social Club at Lynch.
The project is a mosaic sculpture that honors and chronicles the passage of African Americans, many coming from the Deep South, who journeyed to Lynch for employment in the coal mines. The influx of workers into the area began nearly 90 years ago with the development of Lynch, at one time one of the largest coal towns in the world.
The public is invited to participate. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony. For more details, contact Robert Gipe at (606) 589-3130.
