Delinquent tax bill signed

FRANKFORT

Gov. Steve Beshear signed into law Tuesday a measure that changes Kentucky’s system for handling delinquent property taxes.

The bill sponsored by Rep. Arnold Simpson, a Covington Democrat, shifts responsibility for selling delinquent taxes from the county sheriff’s office to the local county clerk’s office. The bill also changes the way people who owe delinquent taxes can negotiate payment for their overdue taxes.

The plan also sets a standard statewide policy for handling delinquent taxes. Among the changes, people who buy delinquent property taxes now would have to be registered.

The law takes effect immediately.

The legislation is House Bill 292.
