Deputies say heroin may have been found in search of car here

Police have sent substances believed to be heroin and cocaine to a lab to be analyzed.

Members of the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department found suspected heroin, suspected cocaine and prescription pills on January 27 inside a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe owned by Eric Duwayne Howard, 32, of 1119 Highway 2036, Letcher, according to a new release from the department.

Police also seized a Bushmaster AR-15 style rifle and more than 500 rounds of ammunition, all found in the vehicle, according to the news release.

A search warrant was obtained a day after the sheriff ’s department found Howard carrying $ 6,516 in cash and prescription pills. Police were serving a parole violation warrant on Jan. 26 when Howard was found hiding inside a small storage area near his home. A search of Howard’s wallet turned up documents consistent with prescription pill trafficking, including out-of-state drug sources, said Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb.

Howard was charged on Jan. 26 with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance in addition. Additional charges stemming from the search warrant will be filed.

Howard remains lodged in the Letcher County Jail. Bond is set at $10,000 cash.

The investigation is ongoing by the sheriff ’s department.
