Davita Raven Rock, a new kidney dialysis center, is now open at Gateway Industrial Park at Jenkins.
The new center, formerly located at the Whitesburg hospital, has 11 dialysis stations and will treat patients on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and may expand the number of days if there is enough demand.
“I am so excited we can offer these life saving service to Letcher County, the community of Jenkins, and surrounding counties,” said Laura Ray, administrator of the facility.
Kidney failure, also known as end stage renal disease (ESRD), is a fatal condition unless a kidney transplant is available or a patient undergoes dialysis, in which a machine filters toxins and fluids from the blood. Dialysis patients are treated four hours a day, three times a week.
According to DaVita, a Denver-based Fortune 500 company, groups at the highest risk for kidney failure are those with diabetes or hypertension and older adults.
