Dinner, rose for mothers

A schedule of workshops for the “Back to our Appalachian Roots Project” will be published in this column each week and on our Facebook page. Please register for workshops. This will ensure there is a place for you and free materials for you to work with. Texting or calling is encouraged for registration for each session requiring materials. Presenters interested in helping may call or text also 606-671-7023.

May 6, 10 a.m.–12 p.m., beekeeping, cooking vegetables over the open fire, and an ole time jam session.

June 10, 10 a.m.–12 p.m., gardening, cooking fresh meat on the open fire, and an ole time jam session.

Jam session participants should bring their instruments and learn to play traditional ballads and square dance tunes. There will be lead musicians on each traditional instrument to guide those participants who are learning. No skill is required, however, a yearning for learning is welcome.

Friday Nite Pickin’ on April 21, at 7:30 p.m. Cross Country Bluegrass will be with us to keep our feet dancing and our ears tickled with their great sounds. No kidding, these guys are wonderful. Come on out and partake of the good time and music at our place. We’ll welcome you and your family among us and if you are single you can join us too. We have a lively group of singles looking for new friends and dance partners. These are “salt of the earth” type folks you will love as much as we do. Come join us!


April 23, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., the monthly shape note singing in the do re mi tradition. This is an ancient art form. It will feed your soul’s need for creative expression. No experience necessary, no talent necessary, no church affiliation necessary! Come out and join us for this community effort to rebuild the singing culture in Hemphill, for which we were once well known. Please bring a snack to share and a dollar or two for a love offering for the facility. Coffee and water will be provided. All are welcome!

May 14 from 12 to 2 p.m., Mother’s Day Dinner with a rose for mothers. Advance tickets being sold by board members. Call 606-821-8723, 606- 855-7316.

Friday Nite Pickin’: Children get in free when accompanied by an adult. Open mic at intermission. Family friendly environment.

Inclement weather policy: If the main roads are clear and our parking lot is clear we will generally have scheduled events. Check our Facebook page for cancellations. Cancellations will be posted at least 2 hours before any scheduled event.
