Discontinued flights to hurt eastern Kentucky residents

Getting there from here by air is about to become a little more difficult for southeastern Kentucky residents.

On the heels of American Airlines’ decision to pull out of Tri- Cities Airport in Kingsport, Tenn., comes the news that AirTran Airlines will stop its daily non-stop flight to Orlando, Fla., from Bluegrass Airport in Lexington.

American Airlines, which filed for bankruptcy protection late last year, is ending its popular and frequently sold out daily non-stop flights from Tri-Cities to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on Jan. 31. Southwest said it stop its AirTran flights from Lexington to Orlando on Aug. 31.

Bluegrass Airport will continue to offer non-stop service to Orlando on Allegiant Airlines two days a week. Bluegrass also offers daily non-stop flights Chicago O’Hare on American and United Airlines.

Allegiant Air also offers nonstop service to Orlando from Tri- Cities on Mondays and Fridays only, and to St. Petersburg, Fla., on Sundays and Thursdays.
