The Dollar General Store in West Whitesburg was issued a retail beer license on Tuesday, making it the seventh business in the city to be given permission to sell malt beverages.
Last week, Rite Aid pharmacy and Big Daddy’s Liquor Barn LLC — located on opposite ends of Whitesburg — were granted liquor package licenses. Eric Harkreader, Rite Aid spokesperson, expects it will be at least two weeks before Rite Aid shelves are stocked with liquor and wine.
Big Daddy’s Liquor Barn LLC, which is owned by Sandy and Steve Hammock of Whitesburg, will be located at Ermine. The Hammocks do not have a building constructed yet and the license will not become active until the store is ready to open.
Rite Aid was issued the city’s first retail beer license on October 12. Big Daddy’s Liquor Barn, Food City, Walmart, East KY Discount Tobacco and Beer, and Fuzzy’s Beer and Tobacco have all been issued retail beer licenses since.
The licenses were issued as a result of a June 2012 special election when Whitesburg residents voted overwhelmingly to expand alcohol sales from restaurantonly.
