Dollar Store will sell beer

Whitesburg’s new Dollar General Store is expected to be the next retail outlet given a license to sell beer and malt-based drinks.

Dollar General Partners placed a legal advertisement in this week’s edition of The Mountain Eagle stating its intention to apply for a malt beverage retail beer license no later than December 10, 2012 at its business located at 2810 Highway 15 in Whitesburg.

The Dollar General Corp., which has more than 10,000 stores in 40 states, began selling beer at its stores in 2011 in keeping with its mission to be a one-stop destination for everyday supplies.

Food City, East Kentucky Discount Tobacco and Beer, Rite Aid and Walmart were recently issued retail beer licenses by the Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. All of these businesses are now selling beer as the result of a June election in which Whitesburg residents voted by a margin of more than two to one to expand alcohol sales from restaurant only.

Still to be determined is the awarding of two licenses to sell liquor and wine by the package.
