Don’t tempt thieves, police warn

Police are reminding people to be cautious of an increase in theft-related activity during the holiday season.

“We want people to be extra careful,” said Whitesburg Police Sgt. Tyrone Fields.

Fields said the Whitesburg Police Department has received complaints of vehicles broken into at the Walmart parking lot over the weekend. He said it is common for thefts to increase closer to Christmas.

Last year, Fields said, vehicles were broken into at the Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital parking lot.

“Don’t leave items (in your vehicle) out in the open — money, jewelry,” said Fields. “If you do, more than likely it is going to get broken into.”

Fields said the police department has increased the number of officers who are patrolling during the night.
