A 61- year- old Pike County man died Saturday evening after the drag racing car he was driving left the Isom racetrack and crashed.
Willard Michael Hicks, of Shelby Gap, was operating a 1964 Nova during a drag race around 6:30 p.m. at Mountain Motor Speedway when the car collided with a guardrail on the track, according to a Kentucky State Police news release. The car veered across the drag strip and traveled over a railing where it overturned and struck an embankment, police said. The car then collided with a tree before coming to rest on its top.
Hicks was transported by Letcher Ambulance Service to Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 7:57 p.m. by Letcher County Coroner Perry Fowler. Head and neck trauma is listed as the cause of death, Fowler said.
The crash remains under investigation by KSP Post 13 in Hazard.
