Dreaming of winter foods

Go to our Facebook page for announcements and pictures posted after each event, www.facebook.com/ pages/ Hemphill- Community-Center, www.facebook.com/Hemphillblacksheep.

Check out our two new websites: www.hemphillcenter.org and www.blacksheepbrickoven.org.

This past week was a sort of sleepy week as business was slow once all the school shopping was done. As always, during slow times, we tried out new recipes and dreamed of new menu items for the bakery.

We are dreaming of the wholesome winter fare we enjoy cooking in the short days and long nights of the coming months. Pumpkin treats, apple treats, and gingerbread are at the top of the list. Last year during the holiday season we made over 2,000 hot rolls along with all the other things we baked. We are still baking with the most quality ingredients available in our area. We use real butter instead of margarine. We use unbleached flour without preservatives. We use a plethora of whole grains, local honey, local maple syrup, raisins, seeds, herbs, spices, extra virgin olive oil, fresh seasonal fruits and veggies.

We cook fresh foods in small batches. Our pizza sauce is simmered on our stove and tended with the utmost care. You can get a mediocre pizza anywhere. We strive to serve you pizza that is special, pizza you will come back for.

If you are looking for cheap, mass-produced food we are not your vender. That kind of food is causing all sorts of health problems and is widely available. We strive for quality and therefore the taste is always right.

Friday Nite Supper Club: There is a 30-minute break in between, usually from 7:45 to 8:15. The featured musicians play two 45-minute sets starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. and play a variety of genres. Aspiring musicians and veteran musicians are always welcome to show up and perform. It’s always fun to play or listen. There is no cover charge so it’s always a laidback easy crowd to play for. Come join us in supporting local live music by local singer/picker/ songwriters while dining on good Black Sheep Brick Oven Bakery foods.

We decided to place our unsold bread outside in coolers on Saturday mornings for folks to take. It will be left on the outside stage until a more suitable arrangement can be made to dispense it. This preservative-free bread will not last long in this heat. We hope folks come and take it on Saturdays before it sits too long in the heat. It will keep almost a week at room temperature. It will feed the belly and feed the soul. If you are hungry show up early so you can get a loaf. We want you to have first pick.

Very Important Note: John Ng’s Four Seasons Martial Arts will be meeting henceforth till further notice to Sunday evenings at 5 p.m. Master Frank Sexton, instructor.
