One man is dead after his sport utility vehicle (SUV) hit two dump trucks at Leatherwood on September 13.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) for Tim Coots, 47, of Wooten, who died in the collision.
Kentucky State Police in Hazard said Coots was driving a 2002 GMC Yukon South on KY 463 at Slemp when it crossed the centerline and hit a 2001 Kenworth dump truck driven by Walker Johnson, 45, of Jackson. Coots’s SUV continued south after the collision and rounded a curve on the wrong side of the road, and hit a 1998 Freightliner dump truck driven by Richard Mitchell, 40, of Ermine.
Coots was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, and two passengers in his vehicle were flown to Holston Valley Medical
Center with non-life threatening injuries. The passengers were Robert Keith Caudill and Jasmine Cornett, whose ages and addresses were not available.
The incident occurred shortly before noon Friday. Police said Coots was not wearing a seatbelt when the incident occurred. His body was taken to the Kentucky State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for autopsy. Det. Scott Caudill is investigating the collision.
