Drug abuse prevention funding being offered

United for Substance Abuse Prevention (USAP), Letcher County’s drug abuse prevention community coalition, receives funding from both Operation UNITE and the Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy. USAP is developing its budget for 2014- 2015. Organizations which wish to have activities and events included in the USAP budget are encouraged to apply. All requests must address drug abuse prevention. Recipients of USAP funds are expected to attend monthly meetings.

To request an application, email angela.gibson@ jenkins.kyschools.us or call 832- 0009. Applications are due at USAP’s monthly meeting on April 3 at 5 p.m. in the Harry M. Caudill Library in Whitesburg. Applications and will be discussed and prioritized at this time. Applicants and the public are encouraged to attend.

Past USAP budgets have provided archery equipment for all the school teams in Letcher County and Jenkins Independent Schools. As requested, continued support for replacement materials and to expand teams has been provided.

Other alternative and educational activities have included film nights at area libraries. Additional funds have supported mentoring programs at both the high school and middle school level, Hooked on Fishin’ Not Drugs and speakers in our schools.

USAP has established two prescription drug-drop boxes in the community, one at the Letcher County Sheriff ’s Department and another at Jenkins City Hall. These collection points for unused prescription medicines ensure proper disposal and prevent the misuse of these potent drugs.

Past and present budgets have also made possible several after-care recovery programs and community awareness events. All activities have been possible with the help of volunteers who work to see wellness grow in the community.

United for Substance Abuse Prevention meets the first Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. at the Harry Caudill Library in Whitesburg. Applications for assistance in the community’s work of substance abuse preventions and recovery are invited. The public is invited to attend all meetings.
