We are constantly trying to tweak things to make them more doable and better. Friday Nite Pickin’ was started over 21 years ago and for about 10 years it was very successful. As the recession began it went into a gradual decline. For about 12 years it has been on a downhill slide. As the coal business began to go on a downward spiral, families moved away in search of work and the economy worsened. The county funds dried up along with the amount of coal being mined in the meantime and all the non-profits began to vie for the few entertainment dollars families possessed. Friday night became music nights in other communities.

I remember when I was in high school bluegrass became cool and folks were picking the genre all over the world. It doesn’t seem like large numbers of younger folks are so much into it these days. That being said… sometimes things no longer work out and you have to let go of stale tradition a little and try a new way. At Hemphill Community Center we will never let go of the music. It is a tradition we love and cherish. We have, however, revamped our Friday Nite Pickin’.

We have converted Friday Nite Pickin’ to a supper club environment where folks can come and enjoy music while eating their evening meal from the fabulous Black Sheep Menu. We will have a featured local singer/ songwriter every Friday. Last Friday, Big Will Caudill and Boyd Davis played a great show. These are two well-loved celebrities in the local music circles. We all enjoyed the fresh new laidback format of Friday Nite Pickin’. Folks danced and the musicians were kind to play requests. It was awesome.

This week our featured singer/songwriter is Gary Joseph. We hope you will support our efforts and support our local musicians doing live music!!! Come join us!!!

You have an open invitation to come and hang out with us at the Center when you can. We have Wi-Fi now so kids and adults are better satisfied not being cut off from their electronic devices. We also have a playground and a walking track so bring the whole family for a visit.

It’s a hate free zone and you are invited!! Come and linger among friends!!!
