Eula E. Ison Gilliam, 86, of Wise, Va., died June 17 at Norton Community Hospital in Norton, Va.
Born at Kingdom Come Creek to the late Grant and Mary Stallard Ison, she was one of thirteen siblings.
She was graduated from Whitesburg High School, and was also graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Berea College in 1956.
Mrs. Gilliam was a retired schoolteacher of seventeen years from the Letcher County and Wise County, Va. school systems. She had attended Becker’s Chapel and Charity Baptist Church in Wise.
She was the widow of Silas Whetsel Gilliam, and was also preceded in death by nine siblings.
Surviving are three sons, Silas Gregory Gilliam of Wise, Jeffrey Wayne Gilliam of Thomasville, N.C., and Gary Alan Gilliam and wife Thea McDilda Gilliam of Appomattox, Va.; three grandchildren, Jessica Gilliam VanEmburgh and husband David, Abigail Gilliam Mangum and husband Greg, and Nathan Grant Gilliam; a great-granddaughter, Millie Grace Mangum; a brother, Glennon B. Ison and wife Thelma; two sisters, Gracie Boggs and husband Pat, and Doris Day and husband Doug; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gilliam were held June 21 at the Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel in Wise, Va. Graveside committal services and burial were held June 22 at the Smith-Gilliam Cemetery in Wise, Va. Donations may be made in Mrs. Gilliam’s name to the American Cancer Society at Cancer.org.
