Everyone falls in love with the mountains

Big Cowan

Audrey Hammonds called and said she and Charles were on their way to Ohio because Charles’s brother Carl died July 19. Keep them in your prayers.

My granddaughter Ashley was here last week. She went to church with us Sunday morning and then to Dee’s bridal shower. On Wednesday morning she went to Dee’s wedding. Deidra Nicole Fields and Samuel Gibson were married at the Big Cowan Old Regular Baptist Church on July 22. It was a busy week for Ashley. She is such a pretty girl and wants to move down here when she is 18. We will have to see about that.

Jerry Hunteman and his family were in from North Vernon, Ind., for a family reunion in Hazard. He came to Whitesburg and got close to our house and had to leave. Maybe next time, Jerry. He worked with my husband at Delta Faucet and talked to him via cell phone. He talked about how nice the weather was here and how pretty the mountains were. Seems like everyone falls in love with the mountains. But can you blame them.

Wayne Turner from Ingrams Creek turned a big 46 years old July 19. We sang “Happy Birthday” to him at church. His mother Mary Lou got mixed up and said he was 64. We all laughed.

Our church had a good service at the nursing home. About 27 people were in attendance (counting the residents). There was lots of good singing and preaching. One of the residents got up and sang “I’ll Fly Away”. It touched all of our hearts. He sang it with Wayne Turner.

Jasmine Ambrose returned to Indiana. She had been here visiting relatives. She is the daughter of Pamela Fields (formerly of Big Cowan) and Willie Ambrose of Goodin, Miss. I am glad she had a good vacation.

Our church, the Freewill Baptist Church at Whitco, is looking for a piano player for Wednesday evening, Sunday morning and Sunday evening services. Also, we would like to invite all of your children to Sunday School. Please call our pastor Johnny Collier at 633- 0995 if interested.

There are lots of children and grownups who do not have a church that they attend regularly, so we would like you and yours to come and be with us. If you need a ride, please call and I am sure someone will pick you up. We have services at 6 p.m. Wednesday, 11 a.m. Sunday, and 6 p.m. Sunday evening. We also have a benefit singing and dinner for $5 n the first Saturday of each month and a nursing home ministry at 6 p.m. on the third Saturday night of each month. Everyone welcome.

I stopped and saw Tommy Day (son of the late John L. and Violet Day). He was in for a family reunion. He lives in Indiana. The last time I saw him was when he and his wife had Letcher County Days at their home. It was good to see him again and thanks for reading my news. He has a real cute little home at the old homeplace.

Happy birthday to our pastor Johnny Collier. He will be 62 Aug. 3. Have a good one.

Irene and Eugene Day have been picking beans and brought me a mess of granny beans. Linda Polly gave me a cabbage head. Herb Fields gave us zucchini and squash and my granddaughter brought us some zucchini and squash from Indiana. My husband and I will enjoy!

I hated to hear that Delma Roark of Kingscreek died. She was the aunt of Roger Eldridge. The visitation and funeral were at Letcher Funeral Home. Our sympathy goes out to the family.

Also, Coman Brashears died. He was married to Gipsey Boggs. Our sympathy goes out to his family.

Birthdays for the month of August are Irene Day, Aug. 6, who will be 81; Kathy Wolfe, Aug. 12, who will be 56. Also, Taylor Giddings will be 16 on Aug. 12 and our son Mike Fields will be 38 on Aug. 26. Happy birthday to all.
