Ex-jailer candidate charged with thefts

Police say a former candidate for Letcher County jailer is linked to three recent thefts in the Colson area.

Letcher County Sheriff Danny Webb said Scott Kiser, 30, of 163 Pistol City, Whitesburg, broke into an unoccupied house in Colson on Jan. 5 and stole many items including guns, computers, furniture and a refrigerator. Kiser, who ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for jailer in 2010, was arrested Jan. 16 and charged with second-degree burglary, theft by unlawful taking or distributing (firearm) and theft by unlawful taking or distributing from a building.

Webb said Kiser stole a utility trailer in Colson on Jan. 11 and charged Kiser with theft.

A warrant was served for a crime allegedly committed Oct. 16, 2011 and Kiser was charged with theft by unlawful taking in that case.

Kiser is being held in the Letcher County Jail where bond is set at $1,000 cash.
