A former Letcher County man was killed late Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident in Harrogate, Tennessee.

Kenneth Widner, 53, of New Tazewell, Tennessee died when the Kia Forte he was driving collided with the flatbed portion of a semi-truck, the Claiborne Progress reports.

Widner, formerly of Partridge, was traveling south on the Cumberland Gap Parkway (Hwy. 25E) in Harrogate when his vehicle hit a 2015 Peterbilt straight truck driven by Christopher Bingham, also of Harrogate.

According to the Progress, Tennessee Highway Patrol officer Chadwick Arnwine said the truck was sitting stationary in the left-turn lane at the intersection of Hwy. 25E and Patterson Road when Widner slammed into the right rear of the semi’s flatbed with enough force to continue under the bed, shearing off the roof and top of the vehicle.
