A contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will begin work Monday to replace the bridge that leads from Crafts Colly and the Walmart plaza area to U.S. 119.

The current bridge on KY 2034C in Whitesburg was built in 1921.

The 100-year-old two-lane structure, which is off US 119 across from Letcher County Central High School, will be dismantled and replaced with a modern two-lane bridge built to current engineering standards.

Bush & Burchett of Allen, the contractor, plans to start work June 21, a detour will go into effect that morning. Drivers from Crafts Colley will be directed along KY 2034 past Walmart to the intersection of KY 15 at Childers Oil. Drivers going toward Walmart from US 119 will be directed to the KY 15 intersection at the Pine Mountain Grill, where they will turn right on the connector street to KY 2034. The new bridge will cost $1,514,187.55 and is expected to be complete in late September or early October.

The detour will be in place until the new bridge is opened.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s Bridging Kentucky initiative is a commitment to improving safety and soundness of the Commonwealth’s bridges by rehabilitating, repairing, or replacing critical bridges throughout the state. The program is designed to open closed structures, improve bridge lifespans, ensure appropriate weight capacities are met, and improve access and mobility for all Kentuckians.
