There are several activities, events and projects of interest the Letcher County Extension Office at 478 Extension Drive in Whitesburg will be sponsoring in the upcoming weeks:
On Friday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. there will be a lesson on “Life Story: How Your History Can Help You”. Your life story is an account of the series and events that make up your life. Your life story is important because it helps explain who you are, where you’ve been, how you got there, where you are now, and even what you will be doing in the future. During this lesson, you will get started on your own life story and see how documenting it is valuable for promoting an active brain, quality relationships, mental healthiness, and legacy building. There is no charge to attend the lesson.
There will be a one-day Arts and Crafts Workshop at the Extension Office on Thursday, Oct. 25. Classes offered will be handmade basket, cornshuck angel, woven-top stool, fabric yoyo projects (free). There is a charge for most of the classes to cover supplies. Please call the Extension Office at 633-2362 to sign up by Oct.19 or if you have questions.
The annual Holiday Bazaar will be held on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Extension Office. Come and shop for handmade gifts, arts and crafts, jewelry, homemade butter, holiday ornaments, painted gourds, jams, jellies, and more. Everyone is welcome and there’s no charge to come in. So pass the word to your family, friends and neighbors. Crafters, vendors and interested people are calling to reserve tables for $10 each to sell their items. Call 633-2362 if you want to reserve a table (which is provided).
On Thursday, Nov. 15, at 1:30 p.m., the annual “Holiday Road Show” will be held at the Extension Office. This is a program that shares ideas for holiday decorations and gifts with the directions on how to make them, and delicious foods and treats to taste — and you will get the recipes. This is always a very enjoyable event and puts everyone in the holiday spirit. There is no charge to attend, but please call 633-2362 by Nov. 9 to sign up so we will have enough food for everyone to taste.
Letcher County Extension Homemakers are celebrating their 70th anniversary this year with the publication of a cookbook, “Homemade and Delicious Favorite Family Recipes”. It includes recipes from some of the best cooks in Letcher County and it’s a great buy for only $5. The cookbooks are available for purchase here at the Extension Office and at the Pine Mt. Craft Co-op.
Another beautiful publication is the booklet “Letcher County Quilt Trail”. It has photos of 115 of Letcher County’s painted barn quilts, which are on display all over the county. There is a listing of their physical location, pattern or design name, name of the artist who painted them, size and GPS coordinates so someone can go on a quilt trail search. The books are $10 and can be purchased at the Letcher County Extension Office and Pine Mt. Craft Co-op.
