Photo essay, art, essay and storytelling contests will be included in 35 annual Fall Fling in Wise, Va., October 12 and 13.
The festival’s photography contest offers competition in three classes; Youth, Amateur and Proficient. Shutterbugs can submit entries in these four categories: Nature; Pictorial; People/Pets; and Digital/ Altered. A Digital/Altered image refers to any print which has been manipulated, either in the darkroom or on the computer, to an extent which is noticeably changed. This could include a black/ white image.
Prizes will be awarded in each category for amateurs, and in one inclusive category for the proficient and youth categories. In addition, there will be a Best of Show and Peoples’ Choice.
The James L. Newton Achievement Award, in Memoriam, will also be presented. Leave prints at the Clapboard House, Main St., Wise, Va., from Friday, Oct 4, until Monday, Oct. 7, until 1 p.m.
Entries in the art contest should be no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet tall, and are due First Bank & Trust by Oct 8, at 4 p.m.
First, second and third place prizes will be awarded with winners receiving $75, $50, and $25, respectively.
The art and photography entries will be on display at Hodge Lodge #8, AFAM (Masonic Hall), 313 E. Main Street, Wise on Saturday and Sunday. The reception for both photo and art will be Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. at the Masonic Hall, during the Fall Fling.
The essay contest, with the theme “Mountain Memories”, includes adults and youths, with prizes awarded in both categories.
The submission should be typed and limited to 750 words. A cover sheet with name, address, phone number, and whether adult or student, and school, should also be included.
Entries must be received by Thursday, Oct. 3, and may be mailed to: The Clapboard House, Box 1489, Wise, Va. 24293, Attn.: Essay Contest.

There is a new storytelling contest this year for seniors wishing to share an original short story, a tall tale, fable, etc. The winning story will be read at the ‘Seniors in the Glades’ Event on Oct. 9.
The Senior Event, which goes from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., includes with Bingo, free food, music, and Mr. and Mrs. Beauty Contest.
All stories should be submitted before Sept. 25 and can be delivered in person at the Wise County Home Health Office at 346 Coeburn Avenue, SW, Norton, Va., or can be mailed to Wise County Home Health at: P.O. Box 1211, Norton, Va. 24273.
Entries should include name, age, phone number and address, and are legible.
