Families spent time at beaches

Jeremiah

Sorry for not having a column last week, 11 of our family were on vacation. We went to Ocean Isle, N.C., for about a week and spent time at the beach, bike riding, fishing, etc.

As we were going last Saturday morning, we saw a very large black bear beside the road at Mayking and pulled over to take pictures and watch it as it crossed the road and headed into the woods. It was pretty and healthy looking and very big and fuzzy.

Another bear was spotted on Spring Branch by Toby and Colleen Breeding’s daughter, Lori ,and Jump.

Liberty and Noah Campbell, Bonita Adams, Kenny Joe, Hunter Banks and I all chartered a fishing boat at Myrtle Beach and spent half of a day fishing. We caught some big black drum to keep for supper, and after having them cleaned, had about 30 pounds of fish. Bonita caught the most.

After returning home they had a fish fry at Ellis and Ila Adams’s with their catch.

Ronald and Susan Ison and others from Susan’s family spent about a week at Oak Island enjoying the beach.

Also recently, Roland and Carol Blair and their family vacationed at Topsoil Island, N.C. I think their entire family went.

Last Saturday morning a memorial meeting was held at the top of Blair Branch at the cemetery where Craig Adams and others are laid to rest. About 25 attended and we were glad that Ellis and Ila felt like being there.

Ellis is still having some health problems and having more tests this week.

Get well wishes also to Joyce Adams, who has been in the Hazard hospital, and Lester Blair has been in the Whitesburg hospital.

Roy Kenon and Billie Smith of Ohio have been visiting family here and had a yard sale at Lee and Wilma Pridemore’s while here. Wilma’s mother, Irene Dixon, was able to be there too .

Our sympathy to the loved ones of Bobby Jean Collins of Isom, who died last week. She had been at Letcher Manor for awhile since her health had declined.

We are sure having some very hot, dry weather, which is drying up yards, flowers and gardens. We think it’s going to rain, but there’s just wind and thunder without any rain. Maybe it’ll be better this week.

Former Letcher County residents Luther and Betty Jo Asher Adams are very proud of their granddaughter, Shelby, who was recently named the Rowan County Distinguished Young Woman for the year 2013. She is the daughter of Mike and Patsy Adams, and they all reside at Morehead. Congratulations to Shelby, she is a beautiful young lady.

I just learned about the death of ‘Jody’ Marvin Watts of Linefork. His wife, Joni, is the daughter of the late Arlie and Edith Caudill of Crases Branch. She and their children and all of his family have our sympathy during this sudden loss.

That’s it for this week. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July.
