December 3 marked the 60th anniversary of the deaths of the Rev. Kernel Sexton, 46, and his daughter, Emma Jean, 21, in an accident. The two were traveling in a truck that was struck by a L&N coal train at the Ermine railroad crossing.
Rev. Sexton died at the Fleming Hospital a few hours after the accident, and his daughter was killed instantly.
They were on their way to visit Rev. Sexton’s son, seven-year-old Oliver Newton Sexton, who had suffered a fractured thigh when struck by a car the previous Monday.
An ordained minister of the Old Regular Baptist Church for 18 years, Rev. Sexton was a member of the Thornton Church. He was a janitor at Whitesburg High School and ran a small grocery store in Whitesburg.
