Preliminary hearings for a father and son police say recently stole a motor belonging to a gas company are set for 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 29.
Forty-three-year-old Randy D. Halcomb and 18- year-old Randy C. Halcomb were arrested by Kentucky State Police Trooper Brandon Thomas on Dec. 13 after a four HP Honda motor belonging to EQT was found at the Halcombs’ residence at 19400 Highway 160, Linefork. Both were charged with theft by unlawful taking.
Lieutenant Brian Damron of the Letcher County Sheriff’s Department said people are stealing motors valued at $6,000 and selling them for $100 and $200 or trading the motors for prescription narcotics.
“The majority of them are linked to economic or drug needs,” said Damron.
Damron said the motors can be used to run industrial blowers for sawmills or with pressure washers.
Damron said oil wells could possibly explode when motors are taken directly from the wells.
“Not only does it cause financial loss to the gas company, it’s also a huge environmental risk,” said Damron.
