Feds close Knott mine

The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration has shut down an underground coal mine in Knott County.

MSHA spokeswoman Amy Louviere said the agency ordered miners off the job last week because Double A Mining Inc. in Mousie had failed to pay $313,820 in delinquent fines for safety violations. The mine employed 16 people.

Louviere said the move marked the first time that MSHA has ordered miners off the job due to delinquent fines. Deputy Assistant Secretary for Operations Michael A. Davis said in a statement that not holding companies accountable for unpaid fines reduces their incentive to keep coal mines safe.

A person who answered the phone at the company office in Mousie hung up.

Louviere said mine superintendent Kermit Hall sent MSHA a handwritten letter saying the company is going out business.
