Federal prosecutors are suing the operators of three inactive eastern Kentucky coal mines for $665,000.
The operators of Double A Mining’s No. 4 mine and King Brothers Coal mines No. 1 and No. 2 owe that total in civil penalties for violations of federal mining laws. The mines are in Knott County.
The U.S. Attorney’s office in Lexington filed the suit earlier this month. It says 478 citations at Double A since 2005 amount to $639,000 in fines. It says King Brothers owes more than $25,000 for 145 citations from 2004 to 2006.
The suit says the Double A mine has been shut down since 2008 and the King Brothers mines are abandoned.
A number for Kermit Hall, listed as the operator of Double A, could not be located. No one answered the phone at the Hindman home of Larry King, a King Brothers operator. (AP)
