Although sisters Alex and Amanda Fickey will be in Europe at the same time this month, the girls will not be there for the same reasons.
Alex Fickey, a rising senior and 2012-2013 drum major at Letcher County Central High School, was accepted into the Voyageurs International Ltd. Kentucky Ambassadors of Music Program. Between June 30 and July 15, Alex will travel to and perform with other student musicians from Kentucky in seven European countries including England, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Italy, and Germany. Alex has been a member of the All-District Band on saxophone, and participated in the LCCHS Pep Band, Jazz Band, Chamber Wind Ensemble and Marching Band. In May 2011, Alex completed the Blue Way Interactive Educational Experience for Drum Majors at Denison University in Granville, Ohio.
Alex said she and her family are very grateful to everyone who helped her raise the $6,000 required for her to participate in the Ambassadors of Music program.
Amanda Fickey is currently a candidate for a doctorate in the Department of Geography in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Kentucky. From June 30 through July 6, Amanda will travel to the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where she will attend the sixth annual Summer Institute in Economic Geography. Amanda was selected as one of the top candidates for the Institute, which received applications from more than 36 countries. Applications were reviewed independently by members of an international selection panel of economic geographers, and scored according to merit.
Alex and Amanda are the daughters of Jim Stamper and Mona Fickey Stamper of Red Star.
