Funeral services for Finley “Drum” Bates, 78, of Millstone, were held April 17 in Whitesburg. Burial was in Green Acres Cemetery in Ermine.
A son of the late Martin and Anges Halcomb Bates, he was born in Whitesburg. He died April 14 at Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital.
Mr. Bates was a member of the Colson Pentecostal Church. He enjoyed working in his garden and picking up scrap metal.
Surviving are his wife, Martha Fleming Bates; two daughters, Lettie Brown and husband Woody of Millstone, and Goldie Collins of Braden, Fla.; two sons, Charles Bates and wife Tracey of Jonesboro, Tenn., and Thomas Bates of Millstone; a brother, Jessie Bates of Sergent; two sisters, Pearlie Bates of Thornton, and Maggie Stewart of McRoberts; 18 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Casen and Colton; three brothers, Sonny Bates, Linville Bates and Lucian Hall; and a sister, Martin Nettie Bates.
